HSC Programs

Home Safety Month
The Home Safety Council dedicates the month of June – Home Safety Month – to educate and empower both families and businesses to take actions that will make homes safe. Each June, the Home Safety Council brings attention to the problem of preventable home injuries and key risk areas including falls, poisonings, fires and burns and drowning.

Home Safety Literacy Project
The Home Safety Literacy Project was created to reach the high-risk population of some 90 million adults in the U.S. who have limited reading ability. These adults may not be receiving or understanding critical home safety information. With support from the Home Safety Council and through funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the unprecedented campaign focuses on home fire safety and emergency preparedness advice and unites literacy providers with local fire departments and emergency management agencies in a partnership to deliver the key messages as part of existing adult literacy instruction. The Project is being implemented nationally with ProLiteracy Worldwide and Oklahoma State University's Fire Protection Publications.

Safe Steps
Home Safety Council research shows that falls are the leading cause of home injury and related death, with an average of more than 5.1 million injuries and thousands of fatalities occurring in the home each year. Additionally, adults over the age of 65 rank highest for home-related fall injuries and related deaths. To help families, and especially older adults, minimize their risk of falling, the Home Safety Council launched Safe Steps, and awareness building initiative which encourages families to identify and correct potential falls hazards in and around the home.

Great Safety Adventure
The Great Safety Adventure (GSA) began its tour in March 1999 as a "field trip on wheels" to teach school-age children about home safety. GSA is presented by the Home Safety Council with generous funding from the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation. The exhibit visits elementary schools and Lowe's stores to help children and their families learn how to stay safe in and around the home. Rover the Home Safety Hound, the dog whose nose knows safety, accompanies the multi-million dollar interactive exhibit to all appearances. Since its conception, the GSA has reached nearly 1 million children and parents.
