The Kids Prepare America Student Contest Official Rules

No Purchase Necessary. Void Where Prohibited.

1. ELIGIBILITY: The Kids Prepare America Student Contest (the "Student Contest") is open to students currently enrolled in grades 3 and 4 who are legal residents of the 50 United States and District of Columbia, except employees and family members of Home Safety Council and Lifetime Learning Systems, Inc. (doing business as Weekly Reader Custom Publishing), their parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies, and public relations agencies. The Student Contest is void in Puerto Rico and wherever prohibited by law. The Student Contest is subject to all federal, state, and local laws.

2. SPONSOR: The sponsor of the Student Contest is Home Safety Council ("Sponsor").

3. HOW TO ENTER: Individual 3rd and 4th grade students may enter by creating and submitting an originally designed picture that details the importance of disaster/ emergency preparedness and encourages others to get prepared. Pictures must be done on the 8.5 x 11 inch contest template provided. Students must complete the sentences at the bottom of the template.

A completed and signed contest entry form must be securely attached to each submission. One entry per student. Student Contest entries must be submitted to:

A teacher may submit a group of entries on behalf of students in the teacher’s class, or students may enter independently. All entries become the property of the Sponsor and will not be returned or acknowledged. Mechanically reproduced entries are void. Sponsor is not responsible for lost, misdirected, illegible, damaged, postage due, or late entries or mail.

4. DEADLINE: All entries must be postmarked by November 30, 2007 and received by December 14, 2007.

5. JUDGING: Entries will be judged based on the following criteria: creativity and originality (30%); demonstration of emergency/disaster preparedness (30%); clarity of expression (20%); and adherence to contest rules (20%). Winners will be selected from each of the 10 regions listed below by a panel of qualified judges from Lifetime Learning Systems and Home Safety Council, whose decisions are final and binding on all matters relating to this Student Contest. In the event of a tie, the tied entries will be re-judged based solely on creativity and originality. Information regarding entries and judging will not be disclosed.

6. PRIZES: Student Contest entries will be divided into the following 10 FEMA regions. One Grand Prize Student Winner will be chosen from each of these 10 regions. Prizes will also be awarded to one teacher of each Grand Prize Student

Student Prizes:
Ten (10) Grand Prize Student Winners each will receive a trip to Washington, D.C. for him/herself and one guardian. Prize includes (i) round trip coach airfare for two (2) from the airport nearest Winner’s U.S. residence to Washington, D.C. (total estimated retail value $1000.00); (ii) standard hotel accommodations of Sponsor’s choice consisting of 1 room (double occupancy) for 2 nights (total estimated retail value $600.00); (iii) transfer to and from airport to hotel and awards dinner (total estimated retail value $150.00); (iv) per diem for food per person @ $50.00 (total estimated retail value $200.00); and (v) mandatory attendance by student and guardian at The Kids Prepare America awards dinner on June 5, 2008. Total estimated maximum retail value of the Prize package is $1950.00. Prize package does not include gratuities and other incidentals not specifically stated. Total estimated retail value of these grand prizes is $19,500.

Teacher Prizes:
Ten (10) Teachers of the Grand Prize Student Winners each will receive a trip to Washington, D.C. Prize includes (i) round trip coach airfare for one (1) from the airport nearest Winner’s U.S. residence to Washington, D.C. (total estimated retail value $500.00); (ii) standard hotel accommodations of Sponsor’s choice consisting of 1 room (single occupancy) for 2 nights (total estimated retail value $600.00); (iii) transfer to and from airport to hotel and awards dinner (total estimated retail value $150.00); (iv) per diem for food @ $50.00 (total estimated retail value $100.00); and (v) mandatory attendance at The Kids Prepare America awards dinner on June 5, 2008. Total estimated maximum retail value of the Prize package is $1350.00. Prize package does not include gratuities and other incidentals not specifically stated. In addition, each of these 10 educators will receive 35 packages of Sylvania DOT•it Checker lights to share with students. Total estimated retail value of these grand prizes is $21,105.

Winners are responsible for all gratuities, pre/post hotel accommodations, and other expenses during the trip including, meals, snacks, and beverages. Winners are responsible for all travel risks and insurance, if any, and neither the Sponsor nor its affiliates or subsidiaries will be responsible for any loss, liability, or damage arising out of the winner’s acceptance or use of the prize.

Only one prize will be awarded per person. Prizes won by minors will be awarded to a parent/legal guardian. All prizes legitimately claimed will be awarded provided a sufficient number of eligible entries are received. Prizes are not transferable; no substitutions are allowed except by the Sponsor who reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value for prizes that become unavailable. Taxes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the winners, as applicable.

Winners will be notified on or around January 30, 2008 via mail, telephone, or email that, subject to verification, they are winners. If a selected entrant cannot be reached after a reasonable effort has been made, or if an entrant is found to be ineligible, an alternate winner may be selected. If a prize or prize notification is returned as undeliverable, the selected entrant may be disqualified, and an alternate winner may be selected. All winners will be required to sign an Affidavit of Eligibility/Release of Liability/Publicity within fourteen (14) days of notification, or an alternate winner may be selected. Taxes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the individual prize recipient. Entrants and all prize recipients release and hold harmless Sponsor from and against any and all liability with respect to or in any way arising from the contest or the acceptance or use of any prize.

7. CONDITIONS OF ENTRY: All entrants, as a condition of entry, agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of judges, whose decisions shall be final and binding in all respects, including without limitation, decisions regarding eligibility, winners, and the interpretation of terms in these Official Rules. By entering and participating in the Student Contest, each entrant warrants that his/her entry is his/her sole, original work, and that it does not infringe upon the rights of any other party. Further, each entrant agrees that his/her entry will not contain any material that is libelous, slanderous, inaccurate, false, incomplete, patently offensive, illegal, pornographic, obscene, or potentially dangerous or harmful in any way. Judges may disqualify previously published pictures of those that have won previous awards or competitions. Entries become the property of the Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned. Entrants/winners acknowledge and agree that their entries become the property of the Sponsor, who thereby has the right to edit, adapt, modify, reproduce, publish, promote, and otherwise use entries in any way it sees fit. Acceptance of prize by winners and prize recipients constitutes permission to use the winners’ and prize recipients’ names and likenesses without further compensation, except where prohibited by law.

By entering, participants release and hold harmless Sponsor, its respective parent companies, divisions, affiliates, subsidiaries, trustees, franchisees, licensees, advertising, promotion and public relations agencies and their respective directors, officers, employees, and agents (collectively, the "Sponsor affiliates") from any and all liability or any injuries, loss, or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with this Student Contest, entrants’ access to or use of any participating web site, or arising out of the winner’s acceptance or use of the prize. Neither Sponsor nor the Sponsor affiliates make any warranty, representation, or guarantee, express or implied, in fact or in law, whether now known or hereinafter enacted, relative to the use of any prize, including, without limitation, quality, merchantability, or fitness for a particular purpose.

HOW TO ENTER: In 300 words or less, educators must describe how they used the Get Ready with Freddie! program with their class or school according to The Kids Prepare America Educator Contest guidelines to raise community awareness about disaster and emergency preparedness, and how their lessons influenced students to take action to work with their families or others in the community to prepare. Essays must be original, and must be typed on an 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of paper. Entrants must include their name, home address and phone number, email address, grade taught, and school name, address, and phone number on their essays. A completed and signed contest entry form must be securely attached to each submission.

Educators may also enter online at www.kidsprepareamerica.org/ideathatworked (the Educator Contest "Web Site") from 12:00 p.m. EST on September 15, 2007 through 5:00 p.m. EST on November 30, 2007.

The Ideas that Worked! may be posted by Home Safety Council on its Web site at www.kidsprepareamerica.org. Total estimated retail value of these educator prizes is $17,605.

Only one prize will be awarded per person. All prizes legitimately claimed will be awarded provided a sufficient number of eligible entries are received. Prizes are not transferable; no substitutions are allowed except by the Sponsor who reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value for prizes that become unavailable. Sponsor reserves the right to determine whether to post any idea/entry on its Web Site. Taxes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the winners, as applicable. Terms of issuer apply to all gift cards.

Sponsor is not responsible for any computer, telephone, electronic, Internet hardware or software, or any human or technical failures, malfunctions, corrupt transmissions, Internet accessibility, availability or technical error, or unauthorized human intervention, inaccurate capture of entry or other information, or the failure to capture any such information. Further, neither Sponsor nor the Sponsor affiliates are responsible for any lost, late, illegible, misdirected, mutilated, incomplete or postage-due mail or email. Entries that are incomplete, illegible, or corrupted are void and will not be accepted. Sponsor is not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by Web Site users, or by any of the equipment or programming associated with the Educator Contest, and assume no responsibility for any error, deletion, omission, interruption, defect, delay in operation or transmission, technical error, human error, theft or destruction, or unauthorized access to the Web Site. Any person who supplies false information, enters by fraudulent means, or is otherwise determined to be in violation of these Official Rules in an attempt to obtain any prize may forfeit the prize won and may be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual found to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Web Site, or to be acting in violation of these Official Rules. Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any person deliberately attempting to undermine the operation of the Educator Contest in violation of criminal and civil law. Sponsor’s failure to enforce any term of the Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision. Sponsor is not responsible for damage to participants’ or to any other person’s computer related to or resulting from participating in this Educator Contest. If the Educator Contest is not capable of running as planned because of, but not limited to, infection by computer worms, bugs, viruses, tampering, fraud, technical failures, human error, or any other causes which Sponsor, in its sole opinion, deems could corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, or proper conduct of this Educator Contest, Sponsor reserves the right to cancel, modify, terminate, or suspend the Educator Contest and select the winners from entries received prior to the action taken or as otherwise may be deemed fair and equitable by Sponsor. Each entrant agrees not to knowingly damage or cause interruption of the Educator Contest; prevent others from using the Educator Contest; or obtain or modify another user’s account information without his/her consent.
